Taizhou City, also known as the Old Town of Linhai, is located in the old quarters of Linhai, the center of Taizhou's county-level cities of central Zhejiang. In history, Linhai had been Taizhou's political and cultural center before Taizhou canceled county-level cities.
Wang Shixing, a native of Linhai and the founder of China's human geography in the Ming Dynasty said, "Among the 11 cities of Zhejiang, Taizhou is situated in the most perilous location, facing the Yangtze River in its southwest. Northwest of Taizhou, towering rocks soar to the sky." With a unique geographical location, the Old Town of Linhai borders the East Lake on the east, the Beigu Mountain on the north, and the Yangtze River on the southwest. It has been long honored as "the Badaling South of the Yangtze River" for its beautiful scenery and imposing city walls.
As an important heritage site under state protection and a national AAAA tourist zone, the 1,600-year Ancient Great Wall South of the Yangtze River was built in the Jin Dynasty and extended in the Tang Dynasty. The existing 5,000-meter wall zigzags in a magnificent manner. According to historical records, the hollow enemy broadcasting stations of the Great Wall in north China imitated those of the Old Town of Linhai which were built by Qi Jiguang, an anti-Japanese general of the Ming Dynasty. In addition to defense function, the Ancient Great Wall South of the Yangtze River is also characterized by a flood-protection structure of a semi-arch outer side and a square inner side, which is rare across the country.
