On the morning of May 20, inside the Huangyan Songxi Art Museum, a tree of crabapple blossoms, several peonies, and a wall of light and shadow conveyed the most fundamental power of life. This is the world under the brush of a female painter and also the visual inquiry brought to the audience by the ""Spring Flowers Will Bloom—Yang Huijie's Flower and Bird Painting Exhibition”.
Crabapple blossoms have been a classic subject in literati painting since ancient times, often praised as the “immortal among flowers” and “national beauty”, and are frequently endowed with the character of gentleness, elegance, softness yet strong. The painter titled her works “Chronicle of Flowers”, “Crabapple Blossoms Remain”, and “Fragrance Lingers After Several Nights of Rain”, which not only indicate the spring timing of crabapple blossoms but also imply the vitality of “crabapple blossoms remaining charming despite the rain”. The artwork conveys a delicate perception of nature's vitality by expressing emotions through the depiction of scenery.
“This series of small freehand flower-and-bird paintings on the theme of crabapple blossoms maintains a consistent style while incorporating variations. They retain a unified tone of freshness, elegance, and dynamic brushwork, yet differ in composition, color, and form, showcasing the painter's versatile expressive ability within a single theme.” Ge Zhangliang, the director of Songxi Art Museum, commented, "The works not only display the beauty of crabapple blossoms but also convey the painter's understanding and innovation of traditional small freehand flower-and-bird painting. This is a series of excellent works that combines technical mastery with aesthetic appeal”.
Also exhibited are paintings on the theme of peonies. The painter uses light ink and unrestrained brushstrokes to capture the essence of peonies, emphasizing their elegant quality rather than heavy ornamentation. By preserving their pure charm, the works highlight the gentle yet resilient character of the national flower. Yang Huijie explained that this series is created using the small freehand brush technique, with elegant coloring and simple, subtle brushwork. The aim is to restore the peony's innate, refined temperament, revealing its character through artistic expression and showcasing a unique literati taste and style.
The exhibition, jointly organized by the Huangyan District Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism, and Sports and the Huangyan District Federation of Literary and Art Circles, features a total of 52 works. It will be on display until June 28.
