The one-week long 3rd Chinese Art Treasures Cultural Festival was started on November 8th in Beijing. There were 32 representative state-level and provincial-level intangible cultural heritage items exhibited in the festival, among which four bamboo carving handicrafts made by Luo Qisong, successor of Huangyan Fanhuang Bamboo Carving, were displayed in such a cultural feast.
The four works are Penglai Wonderland Armrest (a writing desk tool used by ancient men of letter to rest hands), Fascinating Flute Song Screen, Ruyi Fanhuang Bamboo Carving and Huangshan Mountain Cloud Book Screen.
Attending the festival for the first time, 75-year-old Luo Qisong stated that many intangible cultural heritages were being faced with the embarrassing situation of having no successors, he hoped to take this opportunity to attract more attention to Chinese traditional culture, and at the same time look forward to young people’s early participation to protection and preservation of the intangible heritages.
Huangyan Fanhuang Bamboo Carving is well-known for the skill of carving pictures on the inside face of bamboo. The technique was highly commented by Guo Moruo, a celebrated poet, historian and archeologist, in a comment that a Fanhuang Bamboo Carving handicraft having picuture, subject and seal was rich in poetic and pictorial splendor, a perfect integration of drawing and carving skills.
